Residents who routinely use Lower Fayetteville Road as an alternative to increasingly congested Ga. Highway 34 should notice some improvements on the road in the coming weeks. During Tuesday afternoon's Coweta County Commission meeting, the board approved re-striping the road from Mary Freeman Road to the Newnan city limits. The board asked that Newnan officials help out with the re-striping and also urged the city to seek paving help from the DOT on the road. In the last few years, traffic on the road has increased dramatically. What used to be a rural road meandering through the country has now turned into a major thoroughfare for residents on the eastern side of the county. Commissioner Charlie Jones said he's received numerous complaints about the road and took a ride on it earlier in the week. "In rain and at night, you can't see where the road ends," Jones said. Commissioner Robert Wood concurred with Jones and added that he's almost killed himself on the road because of poor visibility. The commissioners were unanimous that something had to be done to improve conditions on the road and Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter said the road needed paving badly. When DOT Commissioner Wayne Shackleford visited the county in July, he also rode on the busy road. "He told us we could have a paving contract on the road. All we had to do is ask for it," he said. As the road becomes busier with new subdivisions spring up, County Attorney Mitch Powell said the commission might want to examine putting a weight limit on the road. County officials are hopeful the re-striping should begin in the next few weeks.
