Downtown Fayetteville prepares for Dec. 12 Santa Stroll

Santa Claus and his elf helpers will arrive in downtown Fayetteville Saturday, Dec. 12, to help spread holiday cheer and to listen to children's wishes. He will be strolling through shops (marked with a Santa poster in the window) between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Downtown merchants will be offering hot chocolate, cider, cookies and other goodies as they host their second annual Holiday Open House in conjunction with the "Santa Stroll." The seasonal offering is a way for local merchants to show their appreciation for the public's support throughout the year.

"The shops downtown are special," said Sherri Anderson, Main Street director. "You receive personal attention, often by the owner, and are offered a selection of unique merchandise. Shoppers have a choice of beautiful jewelry, antiques, candles, handmade Christmas ornaments and decorations, doll houses and much more."

Open House visitors may register in the shops for a one-of-a-kind prize: a Main Street limited edition Depot Christmas ornament, personally signed by artist Patsy Gullet. Santa will draw the names of three lucky winners at the conclusion of the Open House.

Shoppers may also enjoy the sights and sounds of an old-fashioned Christmas when local groups entertain with songs and dancing during the Open House hours on the south side of the Courthouse Square.

The scheduled entertainment includes:

* 11 a.m. East Fayette Elementary School Chorus

* 11:45 a.m. Dancers (age 3-17) from Miss Patsy's School of Dance will perform their Christmas dance program

* 12:15 p.m. Christmas carols by the Fayette County High School Chorus

Patsy Alewine, of Miss Patsy's School of Dance, said her group has been rehearsing since the beginning of October to be able to give their "Christmas present" in the form of entertainment to the area's residents. "It's a joyous time for all of us," she said, "and after all, isn't that what Christmas is all about giving back? We're thrilled to be able to do something for the community like this."
