Panthers make splash, swim at first home meet of season

Starr's Mill hosted their first swimming match of the year last Friday at the Kedron Aquatic Center against Holy Innocents and Salem High School. Salem took first in both the boys and the girls meets. The Starr's Mill boys took second place in the boy's meet and third in the girl's meet. Coach Cathy McMullen feels the entire squad gave standout performances. " We're a new team and just starting off,"said Coach McMullen. "These kids are really making a splash though."

Both Coach McMullen and Coach Donna Bailey had no context for how the team would compete timewise but they were pleasantly surprised with the promise that the Panthers showed.

There is no regional division in high school swimming, it is broken up into county and state. On a county level Starr's Mill must face McIntosh, Fayette County and Sandy Creek in what have become grudge matches of sorts between the Chiefs and the Tigers and the Panthers and the Patriots.

On a state level, there are powerhouses that have teams fielded from year round swimmers, such as Marist, Parkvew, Westminster and Chattahoochee. Some of these powerhouses have students who have qualified for Olympic Time Trials. Starr's Mill will host Greenbriar and Fayette County on Saturday at 10 a.m.
