There are days when you are on and then there are days when you are ON ! Last Tuesday the Clayton State mens basketball team was in a zone when they traveled to Columbia, S.C. to take on Allen University. Senior Robert Conley scored nine points in the opening five minutes of the game as the Lakers went on to a 34-19 lead at the half. The Lakers held Allen to only one point in the first ten minutes of the second half as they demolished them by a score of 79-29.

Freshman Charle Frazier scored eight points during the Lakers 20-1 run. Coach Jimmy Hebron put in five reserves for the final six minutes of the game and they went on a 16-0 run. Clayton State held Allen to 15 percent shooting from the floor and forced them into 30 turnovers.

"Our defense was sensational tonight," Coach Hebron said. "We have spent a lot of time working on the little things in practice, and those little things really came through for us." The Lakers outrebounded Allen, 58-33.

Conley finished with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Frazier finished with 16 points and five assists. Clayton State then faced Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon at the Clayton State Athletic Center. Senior Robert Conley beat his previous record for most points in a game with 39 points. Conley set the record in the regular season opener at Emmanuel College. The Lakers shot 58 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Lions 46-22. Conley finished the night with seven rebounds and five assists, while senior Mike Ruth and junior Silas Ross each finished the game with 10 points.

On Monday evening, Clayton State hosted Allen University and drubbed them 94-59. Robert Conley was the catalyst for the Lakers once again, netting 32 points. Conley is averaging 31.2 points a game and is shooting 73 percent from the floor. Junior A.J. Rials got his first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and pulling in 10 rebounds. The Lakers outrebounded Allen 46-32 and forced the Yellow Jackets into 29 turnovers.

On Tuesday, Clayton Sate faced Morris Brown (0-6) in their home. The Lakers jumped out to an early lead but the Wolverines responded and tied the game with under six minutes to go in the first half. Morris Brown jumped out to an early lead in the second half but the Lakers would not give up. They went on a 9-0 run, on the strength of a Damien Williams three-pointer, and never trailed again. Junior A.J. Rials finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Robert Conley seemed to be a marked man in the contest and finished with only 11 points.

"Teams will be concentrating on Conley," said Hebron. "He just needs to hang in there and avoid getting frustrated. He has grown up a lot since last year and he is only going to get better as the season goes on." The win puts Clayton State's record at 6-0, the best start in school history. The Lakers will host Fort Valley State (3-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
