Coweta County's business leaders are getting ready to take a serious look at the county's air quality and transportation issues before the region's bad air problem totally strangulates the county's explosive growth.

Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce president Greg Wright confirmed this week the chamber will form an air quality and transportation committee to oversee the county's efforts in trying to help solve two problem areas.

Late last year, the federal government put a halt to all new road construction in a 13-county area around Atlanta until the region's leaders adopt a plan to try to eliminate some of the ozone that makes many summer days in the metropolitan area look like Los Angeles, with a thick brown cloud hanging over the area.

Wright said the chamber realizes the issues of air quality and better transportation have to be addressed to keep the area's economic engine chugging along.

"We're just in the preliminary stages right now. It's probably going to take us a couple of months to get the committee in place," he said.

The committee will take an intensive look at what Coweta's business leaders can do to try to solve the problem areas and will forward recommendations to the full chamber board, Wright said.

Coweta County was placed in the 13-county area last year that must have all of its residents' vehicles pass an emissions test before a tag can be issued. County officials also recently learned that an ozone monitoring station will be placed in the county next year to monitor the area's air quality.
