For the third time this season, a Clayton State golfer has eclipsed the old record of a three under par set last year. Junior Dave Kelly had five birdies and one eagle in the first round of the Rendleman Invitational to shoot a six under par 65 and lead the field by five strokes. Kelly's score is the lowest ever recorded in Clayton State history. He shot a 72 in the second round to help the Lakers win their first title ever in school history. Junior Adam Short finished tied for fifth with a score of 145 while senior Michael Farley finished 15th with a 148. The Lakers finished the tournament tied with Georgia College at a score of 578 and won the tournament after the first playoff hole. The tournament ends the fall season for Clayton State, which finished with a 57-17-0 record in five events.

The Clayton State mens basketball team won their season opener against Emmanuel College by a score of 83-72. Senior Robert Conley scored a school record 36 points in the win. The disappointing thing is that 30 of those points came in the first half. Within the first four minutes of the second half, Conley had four fouls and had to sit down. Emmanuel took advantage of Conley being on the bench and trimmed the Laker's lead down to three with six minutes to go. The Clayton State defense was overpowering however and the Lakers never looked back. "I was extremely pleased with our defense," said Coach Jimmy Hebron. "We spent most of our preseason working on that part of our game and the hard work we put into it came through for us." Junior Joe Benjamin led the Lakers in rebounds with 10 while Conley had eight in the game. Clayton State then played their home opener Saturday afternoon against Morris Brown.

The Lakers had an eight point lead within the first ten minutes of the game but trailed by three points at the half. Though Clayton State was shooting 52 percent from the floor, they had committed 16 turnovers. The Lakers opened the second half with a 17-2 run and never trailed again, winning by a score of 66-53. Robert Conley led all scorers with 26 points while seniors Mike Ruth and Sherod Flono each scored ten.

The Lady Lakers did not fare as well when they hosted Shorter College on Wednesday evening. Midway through the first half, Shorter went on a 17-4 run and never looked back, leading by double digits the rest of the game. Clayton State shot a dismal 29 percent from the floor and did not find their shooting touch until the final five minutes of the game when five freshmen took the floor and put together a 10-0 run. Clayton State's leading scorer was junior Joya Collier who had 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss. The Lady Lakers then travelled to Mount Vernon, Ga. on Saturday to face Brewton-Parker.

The defense was super for the Lady Lakers as they held Brewton Parker to just 38 percent shooting from the floor and out rebounded them 41-34 in the 79-57 victory. Junior Joya Collier hit a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds while Mandy Cowan led the Lady Lakers in scoring with 18 points. The Clayton State women will return to action on Dec. 2 when the host the same Brewton Parker team
