YMCA top honors to George Wiswall

The Fayette Family YMCA has chosen George Wiswall for their 1998 Volunteer of the Year. Wiswall is being honored for his outstanding contributions to the Y and to the community during the past year.

"George's volunteer role in the Y-Indian Guides is significant," said Pam Young, executive director for the branch. "The program has grown from 40 parent/child pairs to 200 participants. George provides leadership to other parents and demonstrates the caring attitude necessary to ensure success for the program and the Fayette Family YMCA."

The Y-Indian Guides program emphasis is on the family and the quality time parents and children can share together. Wiswall said he strongly believes in the program and what the YMCA stands for, which is why he has actively volunteered for the past four years.

Wiswall was involved in the Indian Guides program as a child and said that is why he recognizes the importance of the program. His children are involved now, and he has helped to increase the program's popularity in the Fayette community. As the current Chief of the Creek Nation, one of Wiswall's goals is to help children learn to respect and appreciate the Native American culture.

The YMCA is a nonprofit United Way agency open to all, regardless of age, religion, race, sex, or ability to pay. Financial assistance is available. For more information, call 770-487-2850.
