Mayors of Fayetteville and Senoia are among Georgia elected officials participating in this year's Mayors' Motorcade for patients of the state's regional mental health hospitals.

A part of the holiday season since First Lady Betty Vandiver started the gift-giving in 1958, the motorcade helps make holidays brighter for mental health patients in Atlanta, Augusta, Bainbridge, Columbus, Rome, Savannah and Thomasville. Local gifts will go to West Central Georgia Regional Hospital in Columbus.

Gifts to be delivered by Mayor Michael Wheat of Fayetteville may be dropped off at City Hall at Glynn Street and Fisher Avenue. Mayor Joan Trammell says that locations for drop-offs in Senoia include City Hall, Farmers and Merchants Bank, and the Bank of Coweta.

Items which may be given as gifts for the motorcade include clothing for men, women and children; personal care items such as bath powder, deodorant, hairbrushes, jewelry and cologne; art supplies; bingo sets, puzzles and playing cards; ironing boards and irons; lap robes; writing paper, pens and umbrellas. Special needs include large-size women's pajamas, undergarments, low-heel shoes, coats and sweaters, socks and panty hose.

Other items include men's small-to-medium sizes in bedroom shoes, belts, socks, suspenders, undergarments and jackets.

Other sponsors of the motorcade include the Georgia Municipal Association, Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Georgia Fire Chiefs Association and the Georgia Department of Human Resources. The state's First Ladies have always taken a leading role in the event, says Amy Henderson of GMA.

The present First Lady, Shirley Miller, and incoming First Lady Marie Barnes, will join Betty Vandiver, Betty Sanders and Betty Talmadge for the motorcade's 40th anniversary this year. Gifts will be delivered on Dec. 9 for the estimated 3200 persons in regional mental health hospitals.
