Peeples Elementary School was dedicated Sunday in a show of "effort, enthusiasm, and encouragement" by teachers and students, parents and friends of education, resulting in performance excellence by all participants.

The three "Es" add up to the motto of excellence for the new school, according to Peeples Principal Sandra Watson. "This is the biggest honor I've ever had," said Watson.

In her brief address, Watson said she was thankful for the beautiful new facility, but realized that it takes more than a building to make a school. "I'm thankful for a staff that is child-centered, hands-on and collaborative," she said. "The students are the best."

Supportive parents and a school board and administration which were receptive to the needs of the school were noted as key ingredients for Watson's recipe for excellence, she said.

Fayette County School Superintendent Dave Brotherton told parents, "This is the 13th elementary school built in Fayette County. This is the third time we've built this same facility. We'll keep doing it and doing it until we get it exactly right." He also thanked the parents in attendance for their support. "Without you, (the school system) couldn't be the kind and quality it is."

School Board Chairman Woody Shelnutt recognized the Peeples family who were the owners of the property where the south complex is located, noting their cooperation in allowing the board to acquire the site at a reasonable price.

"It's appropriate to name the school after them," he said.

Fifth grade students David Thurber, Devin Hipp and Steven Mudrinich also spoke briefly about their impressions of their new school. The Peeples Chorus led by Tonya Hearn sang their school song and a collection of holiday melodies.

Currently, Peeples has about 401 students, with a total building capacity of 800 students. Sept. 28 marked the first day of classes in the new facility. Prior to building completion, students were housed at the LaFayette Education Center in Fayetteville, formerly Fayette County High School.
