director for United Way Kristi McMahan has been named area director for Fayette and Coweta counties for the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. "I'm excited to have the opportunity to make a difference," McMahan said. "We have energetic board members and staff in Fayette and Coweta who are just as motivated as I am to help build stronger, safer communities through United Way." Previously McMahan served as a "loaned executive" for United Way in Fayette County, and also as director for the Volunteer Center in Savannah, where she acted as liaison to more than 150 nonprofit organizations in that area. A 1991 graduate of the University of Georgia with a BA in history, she also has management experience with Kinko's Copies and Parisian Department Stores. "Having the opportunity to work with Kristi during this year's United Way campaign, I feel strongly that we will benefit from her talents and energy this year and in the year to come," said Fayette Advisory Board chairman Emory Taylor of Hoshizaki America Inc. McMahan said she hopes to highlight local initiatives being developed in the area. "Most are aware that United Way funds agencies that serve the entire metro area, like the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross, but that's not the total picture of what we do," she explained. "We also act locally through Fayette Senior Services, Fayette Samaritans, Fayette Youth Protection Home, and many others. "United Way is helping people live better right here in our own neighborhood." United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta is the largest, non-governmental funder of health and human services in Atlanta. In 1997, United Way helped one of every five people in its 13-county service area. In addition, 90 cents of every dollar raised by United Way goes to nurture children and youth, strengthen families, increase economic self-sufficiency and encourage citizen involvement.
