Pennies being
pitched for
literacy
To promote literacy, the K Kids Club of Fayetteville Elementary Intermediate School is conducting a Penny Pitch this week, which is National Children's Book Week. Students are raising money to promote literacy programs by contributing pennies, collected in each classroom and then donated to the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library and to Fayetteville Elementary Intermediate School.

The Friends of the Fayette County Public Library assist the Fayette County Library in providing literacy programs for our community, free of charge. Programs include the Children's Summer Reading Club, the Teen's Summer Reading Club, and a new "Books for Babies" program. A portion of the proceeds will be given to the K Kids Club to promote literacy within the school.

National Children's Book Week was started in 1919 and is dedicated to spreading the word about children's literature and encouraging the joys of reading. This year's theme is "Books Go Everywhere" on mass transit, in cars and on planes, even those en route to the moon. This year's theme reflects the mobile, exciting and varied society in which today's children live.
