NotableLaura Scaccia, a senior at Fayette County High School, has been named the winner of the Fayetteville Optimist Club's essay contest. She will receive a medallion and compete for scholarship prizes at the next level. The essay topic was, "If I could give freedom away."
Sarah A. Martin of Fayetteville is among a group of students participating in Furman University's study abroad program in England. She will return to the States in mid-December. Martin, a graduate of Sandy Creek High School and now a junior at Furman, is the daughter of Steven and Cynthia Martin of Fayetteville. Hilary Bowler of Peachtree City has returned from the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. The Conference is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. The theme for 1998 was "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today." Throughout the six-day conference, the students interacted with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps. Bowler, a senior at McIntosh High School, said they visited various sites, including the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, the monuments to Lincoln and Jefferson, and Arlington Cemetery. They also participated in a mock Congress. She said she enjoyed getting to know people, especially her roommates, who were from Maine and New Jersey. |
