The Fayette County High School Band has been chosen to perform at the Sept. 15, 2000, opening ceremonies for the Olympics in Sydney, Australia. According to band director Kenny Beard, the FCHS band was selected by World Projects Corporation, based in California, from "the five best bands in Atlanta." The band members, approximately 200 of them, will be part of the Olympic Band, comprised of 2,000 musicians from across the globe. It is anticipated that it will cost $3,200 for each FCHS student band member and Beard said they are hoping for corporate sponsorships to help offset at least some of that. For a sample of the band's repertoire, a Prism Concert and Chili Supper is scheduled for Thursday night, 5:30-8 p.m., in the commons area of the high school. The concert is free; chili dinners are $5 for adults, $3 for ages 2-10, with tickets at the door an additional $1. There will be door prizes and the food is available for take-out. For the Prism Concert, various versions of the band will be situated at the "points" of the commons area to provide dinner music. Beard said there will be offerings by the marching band, ensembles, soloists and more. For information on the concert/chili supper, which is sponsored by the Fayette County High School Band Boosters, call Theresa Caldwell at 770-461-8978.
