Prayer requests at Woolsey Baptist Church are handled in a unique way. The church has set aside a Prayer Request room and each Sunday morning a trained volunteer sits alone in this room, concentrating on each request.

These requests are turned in with or without a name and focus on such needs or problems as no longer feeling close to God, loneliness, a non-Christian spouse or a child , a rebellious child or marital problems.

The requests are only seen by the volunteer on duty and only if the member has requested it, will it be given to the pastor.

Woolsey Baptist was constituted in 1888 as Harmony Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. I. G. Woolsey served as its first pastor. He had come to the community about 1870 and was a doctor. In 1889, a building measuring 36 feet by 50 feet was completed.

The name of the church was changed to Woolsey Baptist in 1904. A church improvement program was begun in 1950 with the two separate front doors changed to being in the middle, the building was under-pinned and Sunday School rooms were added. Six years later the inside was remodeled and new pews were purchased. A fellowship hall and additional Sunday School rooms were added in 1963. Land farther out Hampton Road was purchased in 1994 and in 1996 the church moved into a new building. The new sanctuary seats 650 worshipers.

Overseeing the congregation is Pastor Chuck Chambers, who has served here since 1987.

He was born and reared in Marietta, Ga., and first began to feel pulled into the ministry during his junior high school years. After graduation, he attended Presbyterian College on an athletic scholarship; went to Columbia Bible College in South Carolina and is a 1987 graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas. He and wife, Lisa, were married in 1979 and are the parents of David, who is a sophomore at Fayette County High School; Steven, who is in the seventh-grade at Whitewater Middle School, and Kari, age 5.

He is currently working on his doctorate through Liberty University in Virginia.

The Rev. Chambers has set as his personal goal that of being faithful to the Lord, to the congregation and to helping people grow in their walk with the Lord.

They are located at 115 Hampton Road, Woolsey, and can be reached at 770-461-9618.
