Patrolman Roy C. Rutherford with the Peachtree City Police Department has completed a D.U.I. Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course taught by the Georgia Police Academy Division of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth.

The program involves observation techniques involved in recognizing when a driver may be operating a vehicle under the influence of intoxicants. Emphasis is placed on the proper manner in which to administer field sobriety tests.

Danell Diane Beede of Fayetteville has received a bachelor's degree in art from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.

Joshua Purinton received his Boy Scouts of America Eagle Rank badge in Oct. 24 ceremonies. He is the first member of Troop 279 to receive the Eagle Rank. Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the troop's sponsoring agency, was the location for the Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

Attendees included representatives from the Sepahoyatev District, Flint River Council, Boy Scouts of America, as well as family and friends. Purinton's great-grandfather, Robert Purinton Sr. of Marietta, and grandparents, Robert Purinton Jr. and Hazel Purinton, also were in attendance.

Troop 279 Scoutmaster Joe Giest and troop committee chairman Bill Nigro presented Purinton with a flag, which had flown over the U.S. Capitol, from Rep. Mac Collins. He also received numerous letters of congratulations from national and local officials. Jerry Lentsch, commander of VFW Post 9949, presented Purinton with a plaque; Maj. William Zvanut (U.S. Army-Retired) read the Eagle Charge; and Mr. and Mrs. Jay Purinton hosted a reception following the ceremony honoring their son.

Purinton is a junior at Sandy Creek High School, where he is a member of the soccer team.

Bobby Williams of Boy Scout Troop 75 has been awarded his Eagle Scout Rank badge. Scoutmaster Tom Hendricks made the presentation during a recent ceremony at First Baptist Church of Tyrone.

Williams started in Scouting in 1988 as a Tiger Cub in Ohio. He moved to Fayetteville in 1991 and advanced through the ranks in Cub Scouts. In 1994 he crossed over into Boy Scouts and participated in numerous Troop outings, campouts, canoe and hiking trips.

Williams' Eagle Scout project was to build a large swing garden for the Southwest Christian Hospice near Union City. The swing is to be used by the relatives and friends visiting the hospice. Home Depot of Fayetteville donated the materials used on the project.

Williams is a junior at Starr's Mill High School.
