Big wins and tough losses last week

Tigers playoff hopes quashed by Bears

Team: Fayette County Tigers

Coach: Clint Burton

Record: 5-4

Last Week: lost to Griffin, 41-14

Key Players: Brandon Croft, 123 yards off of seven receptions, one touchdown. Corey Burton, rushed for a touchdown.

Notes: The Tigers are hurting a bit. First, they lost Wes Clark last week had who had been a force on offense and solid defensively. The line seemed to suffer a bit not blocking for him as the Tigers only rushed for 59 yards in the loss. The passing game was there as Johnson threw for 180 yards but they failed to score until the fourth quarter. Fayette County travels to McIntosh on Friday for the final game of the season.

Chiefs blanked by Cougars

Team: McIntosh Chiefs

Coach: Clint Ashmore

Record: 2-7

Last Week: lost to Newnan, 24-0

Key Players: Nick Dixon, 108 yards rushing, Nathan Bittner, 138 yards passing

Notes: "We didn't come ready to play. It was a real poor effort and we're a poor road team right now," Coach Ashmore said when asked about the game. The Chiefs will host the Fayette County Tigers on Friday in the final game of the season. Fayette County is a little banged up, missing Wes Clark for the remainder of the season, and certainly upset about not making the playoffs. "They will come ready to play and we have to be ready for them," stated Ashmore.

Indians carve up Carver, Columbus

Team: East Coweta Indians

Coach: Danny Cronic

Record: 9-0

Last Week: beat Carver, Columbus, 28-6

Key Players: QB Dantra Clements, 2 TD's, RB Marvin Smith, 2 TD's

Notes: The Indians clinched the Region 4-AAAA championship crown Friday night with their win over Carver. Clements and Smith each had a touchdown in the first and fourth quarters. Kudos go out again to the tremendous efforts of the offensive line and the defense. East Coweta wraps up their regular season by hosting Stockbridge on Friday night.

Panthers 1-0 in new rivalry

Team: Starr's Mill Panthers

Coach: Mike Earwood

Record: 3-5

Last Week: beat Sandy Creek, 23-20

Key Players: RB Ladon Cooper, WR Reuben Houston, the entire defense

Notes: The scene was intense with two minutes left and Sandy Creek trailing by three points and driving. The Patriots were inside the Panthers 10 yard line less than thirty seconds later. The Panther defense stopped the Patriots on three consecutive plays at the line of scrimmage before sacking quarterback Dusty Peppers on fourth down and goal. This was a battle from the opening kick. The teams were excited and played with heart and grit. This will be a great rivalry for Fayette County to enjoy for years to come. Starr's Mill hosts Woodward Academy this Friday.

Patriots lose close game to Panthers

Team: Sandy Creek Patriots

Coach: Don Tyre

Record: 2-6

Last Week: lost to Starr's Mill, 23-20

Key Players: Kevin German, a 63 yard touchdown run, Josh Harrison, a 30 yard touchdown run, Dusty Peppers an interception on defense and good play offensively

Notes: The Patriots came to play and were fired up from the get go. They had three or four players on every tackle early on. The Patriots scored first off German's touchdown but missed the extra point. They led 6-0 at the half. On their next touchdown they could not convert the two point conversion and led 12-7. The Patriots exploded for large plays throughout the game but in the end could not penetrate the Panther defense. The Patriots will play at Twelve Oaks Stadium in Hampton on Friday as they face North Clayton.

Landmark goes to war with Eagles

Team: Landmark War Eagles

Coach: Bill Thorn

Record: 4-4

Last Week: beat Mt. Zion, Carroll, 48-0

Key Players: The first unit played great allowing for JV players to get some playing time.

Notes: The Mt. Zion team has not won a game all year and Coach Thorn knew that they would most likely be hungry and looking to unseat the War Eagles. He did not know that his team would explode for 48 points and roll over the Eagles as easily as they did. "I don't really like these kinds of games," Thorn said. "It's too easy and you don't learn anything." Landmark hosts Greenville this Friday. If the War Eagles can win both of their next two games, they are assured a playoff spot.
