African-American churches to benefit from fire safety education

A church fire safety education program is being launched in the Atlanta area as part of a new joint program, the Community Safety Network, coordinated by Allstate Insurance Company, the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters and the Atlanta Fire Department.

These groups will provide area church congregations with fire safety presentations, a video safety survey and a fire cap extinguisher. Participants will also be made aware of home safety issues, things they can do to help prevent fires and ways to help protect their belongings. The program also includes suggestions on the use of fire extinguishers, fire drills, heaters and home security.

According to the IABPFF, African Americans suffer disproportionately from fire deaths as compared to other populations in the United States. The association's research suggests that this is due in great part to a lack of effective and creditable fire safety education.
