God works in strange and mysterious ways His wonders to perform. Last Sunday night our small mission congregation "His House Community Church" met at our mother church "First Baptist Church Fairburn," and we conducted a baptism where I baptized two teenagers and one adult. For a small congregation this is quite an exciting and spiritually rewarding event! The baptism was the first event in the service. Following the baptism there was an organ concert. There was no preaching and after the organ concert, the service ended. Right after the closing prayer three young children came up to me and said, "tell us about Jesus." After a few minutes all three said they wished to accept Jesus as their savior. When God moves, things happen! From 5-15 September I was up in Alaska on a combined hunting, fishing, and mission trip. We had been in our moose and bear camp now for about 10 days when three of us got in our boat and paddled the stream to a very large valley where we had seen a lot of moose and bear tracks. My friend Roger was hunting to my left about 300 yards and another friend Paul at about 200 yards to my left front. We had all coordinated where we would hunt and made very safe plans as to where we would remain until dark. At about half way through our hunt for that day, I heard two shots fired in succession, but it didn't sound like they came from either of my two friends. My friend Roger came over to me and asked if I had heard the shots and also asked from where did I think they had come. Bill O'Halloran was back in our moose camp about a mile a way but he heard the shots and thought we had taken a moose. He then gets in his boat and gets about half way to where we were and stops his boat and gets out and begins walking directly toward the shots right through the woods using his "dead reckoning" skills. It takes a very skilled individual to walk in unfamiliar woods towards a "sound" and hit the exact spot from where the shots were fired. Bill O'Halloran owns and runs North Country River Charters. Bill is my favorite kind of Christian because he doesn't just talk the talk, but constantly walks the walk in his daily life. As Bill is walking toward what he thought were our shots, he runs into a couple who had started down the river on a float hunt and had hit a log jam and started walking to find the main river, and had gotten lost. The man and his wife had walked for 4 days and nights. They had one sleeping bag and one blanket with them and his rifle. The days had been unseasonably warm but the nights were getting down to about 30 degrees . They had been eating beaver and spruce grouse and drinking river water to stay alive. Had Bill not found them, it is very possible that they would have gotten sick or hurt or hypothermia or all three. If that would have happened, the bears and the wolves would have eventually gotten them. Needless to say they were very glad to see Bill. We eventually all got back to camp and we fed them a hot breakfast of eggs, bacon, and hot coffee. God does not only work in our worship services but whenever, and wherever, and to whomever, and however he wishes. That's why we call him Almighty and Sovereign God. Some may say that this was surly an interesting coincidence, but I strongly feel it was the mighty hand of Almighty God. When God moves...things happen on maion street Fairburn and even in the wilds of Alaska! Praise the Lord!! Dr. Knox Herndon is a recently retired U.S. Army Chaplain and the pastor of "His House Community Church" and are currently meeting at 193 Johnson Ave. Fayetteville, Ga. right behind the Mask Tire Co. off Jeff Davis Ave. Fayetteville. They share the building with PACE Christian School.
