Tigers feast on Knights
Team: Fayette County Tigers
Coach: Clint Burton
Record: 5-3
Last Week: beat Upson-Lee, 22-12
Key Players: QB Gerald Johnson, ran and threw for a
touchdown, Wes Clark, ran for a touchdown and played solid defense.
Notes: The Tigers produced 358 total yards of offense
and scored 14 points in the final four minutes to defeat
Upson-Lee. QB Gerald Johnson and RB Wes Clark each ran for a
touchdown, Johnson's being a five yard sneak for the win. Clark
also intercepted an Upson-Lee pass on a two point
conversion. After losing two weeks in a row, the Tigers needed the win to stay
alive in the playoff hunt.
Chiefs lose to Griffin Bears
Team: McIntosh Chiefs
Coach: Clint Ashmore
Record: 2-6
Last Week: lost to Griffin, 39-12
Key Players: Dion Stokes, 112 yards rushing. DJ Dunlap,
75 yard TD reception.
Notes: The Chiefs led the Bears 6-0 in the first quarter
and played a strong first half but the injury bug bit and hurt the
Chiefs defensively. Ronnie Melton and Nate Wesley were
injured, allowing the Bears to exploit McIntosh up the middle.
The defensive rotations were altered, compromising the defense
and leading to a breakdown of the special teams. The offense
is coming together for the Chiefs, Stokes leads the region in
kickoff returns and is nearing the 1,000 yard rushing mark. As the
team runs the ball more, Quarterback Nathan Bittner is
becomeing more comfortable and more effective.
Indians overpower Grangers
Team: East Coweta Indians
Coach: Danny Cronic
Record: 8-0
Last Week: beat Lagrange, 67-41
Key Players: Marvin Smith, 270 yards and six TD's,
QB Dantra Clements and W.J. Jordan both had two TD's.
Notes: The Indians led 27-13 at the half and proceeded to
score 40 points in the second half. The game was a showdown
between two high powered offenses, accumulating close to 1100 yards
of offense between them. Both teams offensive lines proved to be
the strength of the offenses as they produced the holes that led to
the touchdowns.
Greyhounds outlast Panthers
Team: Starr's Mill Panthers
Coach: Mike Earwood
Record: 2-5
Last Week: lost to Jones County, 28-21
Key Players: QB Brad McClaren threw a touchdown
pass. RB's Ladon Cooper and Matt Tuttle each ran for a touchdown.
Notes: This game is a bitter pill to swallow for the Panthers
as they could have had a 14-0 lead early in the second half.
There were two drives that stalled within the Jones County five yard
line. They fumbled on the first drive in the first quarter and then
after going for it on fourth and goal in the second quarter and
holding the Greyhounds on the first two plays, they gave up a 95
yard touchdown run. The fight did not go out of the Panthers
however. McClaren hooked up with Reuben Houston for a 26 yard
touchdown pass to close the gap to 14-7 at the half. Both teams
scored two more touchdowns in the second half but the two stalled
drives certainly haunted the Panthersas they lost the game in
overtime. Cooper and Tuttle are picking up where Craig Maddock left
off after his injury, by finding and hitting holes and pushing their
way through the line for good sized yards on every carry.
War Eagles edge out the Patriots
Team: Sandy Creek Patriots
Coach: Don Tyre
Last Week: lost to Woodward Academy, 14-6
Key Players: QB Dusty Peppers, threw an 11 yard
touchdown pass to John Bettis. Defensive standouts were Gavin
Bourgeois with seven tackles and one assist, Cedric Goalston with
five tackles and one assist and Jermaine Harris with four tackles
and three assists.
Notes: The Patriots played a great game with the exception
of two major defensive breakdowns. QB Chris Sizemore
played well but got a little banged up and Peppers saw his first action
at QB since being injured against Morrow in the first week. "We
just can't get a break," Tyre said. "The onside kick we kicked at
the end took the right bounce but they recovered it. We may
be outsized and outplayed, but we are never outhearted."
Landmark loses wild one to Temple
Team: Landmark War Eagles
Coach: Bill Thorn
Record: 3-4
Last Week: lost to Temple, 40-35
Key Players: HB's Duran Rice and Eric Quint gave a
good running performance as did FB Marvin Jinks. QB C.R.
Palmer rushed for over 100 yards but had two fumbles that led to
Temple TD's.
Notes: "If you didn't see it, you wouldn't believe it"
Coach Thorn said of the game. Landmark led the entire game
until Temple scored with about 3:30 left. The same Temple player
ran back two fumbles for touchdowns from the exact same
play. Temple also kicked three onside kicks, recovering two of
them and producing touchdowns on those drives. " They scored
four touchdowns before you could even blink," Coach Thorn
said. "The offense and the defense played well, neither of them lost
the game, they were just unlucky." Landmark was poised to win
the region before the loss and now must win at least two of their
next three games to make the playoffs.
