After nearly a month of studying a report on providing sewerage for the town, Tyrone officials took a tentative step last week in figuring out the cost of a sewerage plant. Town manager Barry Amos said he's awaiting word from the Fayette County Board of Education on the purchase price of the school system's Sandy Creek treatment plant on Jenkins Road that currently services three schools. Amos stressed the town is only trying to get a handle on the purchase price in case the council decides to make an offer on the facility. The purchase of the Sandy Creek facility is one option the town is mulling over to try and handle the projected growth for the town in the next few years. He expects to hear from the board of education by the end of the week and forwarding the information to the town council. The town has already approved a 750,000-square-feet office complex on Ga. Highway 74 and is also looking at a large John Wieland Homes subdivision. The just completed sewer report projects more than 2.6 million gallons of sewer capacity for the two developments. The town is also considering providing sewerage for the older part of the town, but nearly $5.3 million would have to be spent to install pump stations, spray fields and sewer lines. Preliminary cost estimates for providing sewerage to the Hwy. 74 corridor would be $18.9 million and generate revenues of $3.45 million.
