The Third Army Road Racing Team, from Fort McPherson in Atlanta, sent two teams to compete in the 14th annual Ten -Miler held in Washington D.C. on Sunday, October 11. The race has been hailed by Runner's World magazine as one of the 100 best races in America. This year's race had 14,106 entrants and over 635 team entries. The Third Army's teams consisted of a total of eleven runners all from Fayette, Clayton and Henry counties.

The course this year began at the Pentagon, crossed Memorial Bridge, passed the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln, Korean War, Jefferson and Roosevelt memorials, the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian Castle, the Air and Space Museum and the U.S. Capitol. After a loop around Capitol Hill, the runners backtracked down Independence Avenue and then crossed the 14th Street Bridge on the way back to the Pentagon.

The Third Army Runners were out to win the team competition in their division and they accomplished their mission. The top four runners on each team counted by adding their times for a cumulative score. The Third Army "A" Team took first place in the All Comers Division out of 29 teams with a cumulative time of 3:58:19. Coach Bob Dalton, a member of the Peachtree Running Club, finished first for the team and second overall in the Master's Division. Victory was even sweeter for the team this year as they edged out the Fort Sill team that beat them last year. The "B" team finished a very respectable ninth in the All Comers Division with a cumulative time of 4:55:58.

"This was a great experience for everyone involved. We couldn't have done it without the moral support from the Command Group and financial support from the Third Army Public Affairs Office," said team captain Bill Bowers. Coach Bob Dalton echoed his praise, "When we finished second last year, I was determined to win this year and the guys didn't let me down. I'm proud of the way everyone made it a true team effort."
