Police chief explains leash law

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Senoia Police Chief Ben Thomas wants to remind everybody the city has a leash law and the city actively enforces it.

The law states that every person owning or having custody or control of a dog shall keep the dog exclusively on his property. If the dog leaves the owner's property, it must be under effective control of the owner. Effective control is considered to be:

Confined within a vehicle, fencing or adequate enclosure where the dog has no access to passerbys.

Attached to a leash not over six feet in length and held by a person of sufficient strength to restrain the dog.

Thomas said some cities have laws governing cats and other pets, but Senoia just wants to effectively control the stray dogs that are running loose now. As a part of community education, Thomas plans to update the citizens on a regular basis in the newspaper about the city's rules and regulations.
