Laker boys win and girls split over weekend

The Clayton State men and womens soccer team had a field day on Saturday. The men hosted and defeated Lees-McRae 3-1 on Saturday. Lees- McRae was the top team in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic conference before the loss while Clayton State improves their record to 5-9-0. Sophomore Alan O'Brien scored his team high sixth goal of the season and junior Alain Loukaka scored right before the half. The Lakers kept the pressure on when junior Aaron Fox recorded his first goal of the season off a one on one break away. The Lakers lost the shutout when Lees- McRae connected on a penalty shot with just over a minute left in the game. The Lakers travel to USC- Aiken on Wednesday.

The Lady Lakers beat the Lees-McRae womens squad 4-0 on Saturday. The scoring started three minutes into the game when junior Jamie Goetz scored off of a corner kick. Goetz then fed the ball to freshman Heather Roberson at the 21:00 mark. Sophomore Nichole Kirkland returned from her injury and scored from 18 yards out and Roberson scored her second goal of the game less than six minutes later. The Lady Lakers outshot Lees-McRae 17-4 as their record improved to 6-5-1 on theyear. It was their sixth shutout of the year.

Things did not go so well on Sunday for the Lady Lakers. They were shutout 4-0 by Wingate University. They battled in the first half with Wingate pulling ahead with a goal off of a penalty kick but it was the second half which buried the Lady Lakers. Wingate scored three goals in six minutes to pull ahead 4-0. They outshot Clayton State 13-9 and put the Lady Lakers back at .500 (6-6-1). They will face USC-Aiken at 2pm on Wednesday before the mens game.

In other Clayton State athletic news, senior Robert Conley was named to the Street and Smith's College Basketball preseason Honorable Mention All-America list. Conley, a 6-6 Decatur native, averaged 19.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the Lakers, while scoring 555 points last season (12 points off of the Clayton State single season record). Conley was ranked second in scoring and sixth in rebounding for the PBAC last season. He led his team in scoring 13 times, rebounding 12 times and had 10 double-doubles. Conley hopes to improve on those numbers this season and lead the Lakers to the playoffs.
