The Clayton State men and womens soccer team had a
field day on Saturday. The men hosted and defeated Lees-McRae 3-1
on Saturday. Lees- McRae was the top team in the
Carolinas-Virginia Athletic conference before the
loss while Clayton State improves their record to 5-9-0. Sophomore
Alan O'Brien scored his team high sixth goal of the season and junior
Alain Loukaka scored right before the half. The Lakers kept the
pressure on when junior Aaron Fox recorded his first goal of the
season off a one on one break away. The Lakers lost the shutout when
Lees- McRae connected on a penalty shot with just over a minute left
in the game. The Lakers travel to USC- Aiken on Wednesday.
The Lady Lakers beat the Lees-McRae womens squad 4-0
on Saturday. The scoring started three minutes into the game when
junior Jamie Goetz scored off of a corner kick. Goetz then fed
the ball to freshman Heather Roberson at the 21:00 mark.
Sophomore Nichole Kirkland returned from her injury and scored from
18 yards out and Roberson scored her second goal of the game
less than six minutes later. The Lady Lakers outshot Lees-McRae
17-4 as their record improved to 6-5-1 on theyear. It was their sixth
shutout of the year.
Things did not go so well on Sunday for the Lady Lakers.
They were shutout 4-0 by Wingate University. They battled in the
first half with Wingate pulling ahead with a goal off of a penalty
kick but it was the second half which buried the Lady Lakers.
Wingate scored three goals in six minutes to pull ahead 4-0. They
outshot Clayton State 13-9 and put the Lady Lakers back at .500
(6-6-1). They will face USC-Aiken at 2pm on Wednesday before the
mens game.
In other Clayton State athletic news, senior Robert Conley
was named to the Street and Smith's College Basketball
preseason Honorable Mention All-America list. Conley, a 6-6 Decatur
native, averaged 19.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the
Lakers, while scoring 555 points last season (12 points off of the
Clayton State single season record). Conley was ranked second in
scoring and sixth in rebounding for the PBAC last season. He led
his team in scoring 13 times, rebounding 12 times and had 10
double-doubles. Conley hopes to improve on those numbers this season
and lead the Lakers to the playoffs.
