Tall tales on tap

Well-known Appalachian humorist Chuck Larkin makes his first appearance at Stars on the Southern Crescent coffee house Saturday, Oct. 17, at National Heights Baptist Church in Fayetteville. Larkin, who has been the featured performer four times at the National Storytelling Association Festival and more than two dozen times at regional storytelling festivals, has also worked in radio and television.

Drawing from his Southern roots, Larkin tell tales of growing up on a farm: "We were so poor in those days we had no shoes. We just painted our feet and laced up our toes." And, "In the summer it would get so hot the birds had to use pot holders to get worms out of the ground." Celtic legends, Southern haint (ghost) tales and story snippets from around the world are also part of his repertoire.

Additional entertainment at the Oct. 17 coffee house includes the Dots, with songs from around the world, and the acoustic duo of Grubbs and Imes, with blues, gospel, folk and rock.

National Heights Baptist Church is located at the intersection of Ga. Highway 54 and Old Norton Rd., between downtown Fayetteville and Peachtree City. Doors open at 7:45 p.m., with entertainment starting at 8:15 p.m. General admission is $5 ($4 for seniors and children under 12). Patrons who bring their own mugs from home receive a discount on hot beverages and are eligible for the "Most Unusual Mug Award."
