Local athletes keep winning accolades around the country
By MICHAEL BOYLAN
From time to time, the sports desk receives announcements
of local athletes' achievements. It is not lack of interest that
keeps these stories out of the paper but lack of space. Today, there
is space. Today, the accomplishments will be recognized.
First, there are several local kids that now participate in
college athletics. Zach Caffall of Peachtree City is now a
member of the men's soccer team at Berry College. He is a sophomore,
majoring in Biology and Premedicine.
Genie Leonard from Fayetteville is a member of the
University of Florida's women's soccer team. She plays defense
for the Gators and is hoping for an injury free season this year.
Last but not least, Ben Simpson from Fayetteville is a senior
defensive lineman for the Navy Sprint football team.
In other collegiate sports news, Justin Estes, a 1998
Fayette County High School graduate was signed to a golf
scholarship by Darton College. Justin was a member of the all county
team and played number one during his senior year with a four handicap.
Sean Estep of Peachtree City signed a soccer scholarship
with OVC in Parkersburg,WV. He will be a goalkeeper and
outside midfielder for the Fighting Scots. In high school, Estep had an
average goal per game of 1.4. He is the first Georgian ever selected
to the OVC soccer program.
If you are a fan of auto racing, Joe Tenney of Tyrone will be
racing in the SCCA Runoffs on Oct. 9-11 at the Mid-Ohio Sports
Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. He will be racing his
Toyota-powered Tercel in the GT-4 class against the top amateur drivers
in the country with the hope of being crowned "national
champion."
Brad Griffies,16,of Fayette County won the North
American Challenge Figure Skating event in San Jose, Calif. Brad won
by unanimous decision and was chosen by the United States
Figure Skating Association to be one of three skaters to represent
the U.S in the novice division.
