Military Brief

Army Lt. Col. Ray Hill has graduated from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pa. Hill is the son of Oliver and Cora E. Hill of Sharpsburg.

The 12-month curriculum of the Army's senior officer school prepares officers of all the services, as well as civilian officials of the federal government, to serve in top-level command and staff positions with the U.S. armed forces throughout the world.

Notable

Jared Daugherty, son of Tom and Teresa Daugherty of Fayetteville, has enrolled as a student at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N.J. He is a 1998 graduate of Georgia Southern University.

Christopher Bradley Stevens is enrolled at Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass., this fall as a member of the Class of 2002. About 1,650 first-year students were selected from a pool of more than 16,800 applicants in a rigorous admissions process.

Stevens is the son of Brandon and Debbie Stevens. He graduated from McIntosh High School, where he was president of the McIntosh Intl. Trading Co., vice president of the Youth Advisory Board, the salutatorian, the Atlanta Journal Cup winner, and a member of the National Honor Society.

The following students from Berry College have been chosen to receive scholarships through the college and the WinShape Centre, Inc., a foundation established by Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy of Atlanta: Kylie Jo Elrick, daughter of Bill and Cathy Elrick of Tyrone; Barry Scott Hurst, son of Heather Duncan Roubique of Tyrone; Jason Michael Pyron, son of Ken and Elaine Pyron of Newnan; Bethany Leigh Sherrill, daughter of Stephen and Eileen Sherrill of Peachtree City; and Erica Michelle Stoller, daughter of Linn and Brenda Stoller of Peachtree City.

Fayette County Deputy Coroner W.B. Huddleston has completed a 24-hour Coroner In-service training course conducted by the Georgia Police Academy Division of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth.

All Georgia coroners and deputy coroners are required by law to complete courses as approved by the Georgia Coroner's Training Council to maintain certification. Course topics include legal updates, computer operations, blood pattern analysis, death scene analysis including cause and manner of death, and administrative duties.

The Chick-fil-A chain has announced that Tyrone resident Brian Elliotte has been selected to receive one of its $1,000 Leadership Scholarships.

Elliotte was nominated by his employer, Mike Holmes, operator of the Peachtree City free-standing Chick-fil-A restaurant, where more than $23,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to restaurant employees. A 1998 graduate of Sandy Creek High School, Elliotte is continuing his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
