Lawn & GardenBackyard Association to share tricks for transplanting woody ornamentals
Transplanting trees and shrubs is a subject that seems
to receive less coverage than other gardening topics.
Extensive information is available on planning, planting,
pruning, maintaining and other basic landscape tasks while little
is offered on the specifics of transplanting.
Many gardeners believe it is as somple as moving
plants when they are dormant. Gary Agan, horticulturalist from
Lone Oak Tree Farm, indicates that timing is determined by
specific plants which will vary from the dormant season on into
the growing season for certain trees and shrubs.
Lone Oak has the capability of digging trees up to
seven inches caliper and 16 feet in height. Some of theses trees
are worth hundreds of dollars, so technique is critical if a profit
is to be maintained.
Gary will share tricks of the trade with Backyard
Association which will include a discussion on the timing of
transplant, when and how to root-prune, the use of root
stimulants, and planting techniques.
Before removing valuable ornamentals, discover from
an expert the best methods that will impove chances for
success. The Backyard Association will be held Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at
the Coweta County Extension Service located at 21 E.
Washington Street in Newnan.
