With a master plan for recreation a few steps closer to reality, the Peachtree City Recreation Commission has set up a public workshop for Oct. 12 to discuss progress on the plan, says Leisure Services Director Randy Gaddo.

The master plan will be "the only agenda item," Gaddo noted, "but we need to hear from people we haven't talked to yet. Several groups have already made input, and we're looking for new public opinions. This will allow us to move toward forming recommendations in the plan."

The commission's chairman, Earl Spell, and plan designer Bob Betz will introduce the steps in the plan so far, with Spell pointing out what groups have had input, Gaddo says.

The plan is about 50 percent finished, Gaddo notes, and will serve as a map for future facilities and programs in Peachtree City for the next five to 10 years. The workshop is set for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in Room 3 at the Peachtree City Library.

LIBRARY

The Peachtree City Library Commission voted last week to spend $28,947 from its sales-tax "enhancement funds" to upgrade the library's computer capabilities.

The new hardware and software will represent a considerable improvement in services, Randy Gaddo says. A new "server" will allow home access to library "reference CDs" through the Internet, while all the library's machines will be upgraded to Windows instead of DOS. Three new stations will be added, he said.

Two new library personnel are to be hired and trained with the new systems, Gaddo says.

The new systems easily represents "tripling our current capacity," he added. The system is expected to be fully operational by mid-November.

NEW PEOPLE

Peachtree City also is looking for new members for the Recreation Commission and the Water and Sewer Authority.

There are two three-year terms available on the recreation board, starting Jan. 1, 1999, and one five-year term on the water authority. Applications are available at City Hall, 151 Willowbend, and the deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Nov. 6.
