Residents in Coweta County got good news on two weather-related "fronts" this week. First, Hurricane Georges turned into a meek tropical storm by the time it entered the county and caused very little flooding or wind damage as many weather experts projected. Second, the county received a flood payment from the 1994 floods and also hammered out an agreement with state emergency officials to fund the last of the flood-damaged bridges. The county received a $29,332 check from Georgia Emergency Management Agency representative Bill Blackwell to help pay for the record flooding in 1994. Coweta was one of 55 Georgia counties declared a federal disaster area after Tropical Storm Alberto dumped nearly 20 inches of rain on the county in July, 1994. In a related issue, County Administrator Theron Gay signed off on a federal application this week to provide funding for the construction portion of the Andrew Bailey Road bridge replacement. The county will receive $358,570 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and GEMA, which covers the bid on the bridge and a $3,550 administration fee. The bridge was heavily damaged in the 1994 floods. Work on the bridge starts Oct. 5 and Rogers Bridge Company will be performing the work on the project. The road will be closed for at least 90 days.
