By next spring, soccer moms should be dropping off their athletic children at Coweta County's newest recreational facility on Ga. Highway 16.

The 30-acre facility is located just west of Poplar Road and will feature a full complement of athletic facilities including a multipurpose building, several soccer fields and a football field.

Assistant county administrator Eddie Whitlock said work on the facility is on schedule and residents driving by the site should be able to see the progress.

"Right now, the grass on the soccer fields and football field is growing in and a lot of the masonry work is underway on the multipurpose building," he said.

County workers are busy working on the concession stand, which is nearly 75 percent complete, and removing the last bit of rock from what will eventually become a baseball field for lovers of America's pastime on the eastern side of the county.

Whitlock said he expects work to start on the playground next week, and many of the pieces will start falling into place as the year progresses. He expects the facility to open in April, but said county workers will still be doing last-minute tasks after the park opens.

When it opens, the facility will be the first large-scale recreational site built in the eastern part of the county and is a critical part of the county's recreation plan. In addition to the new park on Ga. Hwy. 16, the county is currently converting the old county fair site on Temple Avenue in Newnan to a recreational site and is also busy working on deciding what sort of equipment and venues will be built at the new fair site on Pine Road.

As the county's population continues to grow, the Coweta County Commission has pledged to offer more recreational facilities for its residents. At the Pine Road site, the commissioners are looking at building a large multipurpose building that could be used for family reunions, meetings and cultural events.
