Eliminating litter a 'Fair' goal
for Fayette Clean and Beautiful

Keep Fayette Beautiful is working to make this year's Fayette County Kiwanis Fair a "Litter-Free Event." As they enter the Fair, attendees will be given a bag imprinted with a "litter-free" message in which they can collect handouts, give-aways and prizes.

According to Deeva Boleman, executive director of Keep Fayette Beautiful, they are hoping this will help eliminate the litter that is sometimes generated when people tire of carrying these types of items around and simply put them down, walk off and leave them.

The bags can also be used as litter bags. Signs on trash cans will remind fair-goers not to litter and large banners will encourage the community to help "Keep Fayette Beautiful."

KFB is working on this project with the cooperation of the Fayette County Kiwanis Club, the organization which coordinates the Fair each year. The endeavor is the result of observations and comments from attendees, exhibitors and coordinators of previous years' fairs.

"We realized there's an opportunity for KFB to help with a major community event in an important way," said Boleman. "A lot of garbage is generated at this type of event much of it unnecessarily. Often people litter because they just don't think about it.

"We hope to make people more aware of how they dispose of trash, not only at the Fair, but whenever and wherever they generate it. If everyone would simply take care of their own garbage it would reduce costs for all of us and keep our community clean and beautiful."
