During what some are referring to as a national crisis, what better to come to the rescue than our national past-time. Over the past few weeks, while the White House has been embroiled in a trashy novel-like sexual scandal, two genuine role models have emerged. "Slammin'" Sammy Sosa and "Big Mac" Mark McGwire have displayed the absolute finest in sportsmanship and healthy competition in their pursuit of Roger Maris' major league record for the most home runs in a single season. You would have to live on another planet not to know that both of these athletes have now passed the 37-year-old record of Maris. At a time when Americans young and old alike are in need of positive influences, these two gentlemen stepped up to the plate and delivered what I take to be their biggest hit to date. They have both approached this historic achievement with humility. Their authenticity and enthusiasm carried over from the playing field to school yards and water coolers across the country, providing us all with something in which to take pride. We are living in a time when competition itself has come into question, not to mention that self-centered athletes seem to be the norm of the day. Yet, Sosa and McGwire have exhibited tremendous respect toward the Maris family and one another. They have excelled in their individual endeavors without compromising their teammates. These two superstars have remained ever-mindful of the fans, committed to preservation of history and commemoration of their sport. In my opinion, for that alone they belong with their bats and home run baseballs in the Hall of Fame. To both of you, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire, for what you have done for the youth of this country, for baseball, nationally morality, professional sports, the media, and even consumerism, I'd like to thank you!
