Jazz a fitting season finale

By PAT NEWMAN
Staff Writer

An autumn evening of jazz provided by Spyro Gyra will close this performance season at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater on Oct. 3, beginning at 8 p.m. The group, which formed in 1975, has produced 20 albums and continues to tour across the country. Jazz buffs will recall their first charted hit entitled "Shaker Song," from 1977.

Spyro Gyro's latest album, released last year, is "Road Scholars," their second live concert album. The album was culled from more than 60 performances in 1997, plus one new studio recording titled "Best Friends," recorded at saxophonist and band leader Jay Beckenstein's studio in Suffern, N.Y.

Referring to their early beginnings in the 1970s, Beckenstein said, "Back then we were exploring this music as an adventure. That same idea is behind this live album; playing the music we love with the same enthusiasm that we had when we first started playing just for the love of it. We just happen to be fortunate enough to get the breaks that allowed us to build a lifetime of performing experience from it."

Tickets for Spyro Gyra are $15 in advance, and $18 the day of the performance. Gold tables in the orchestra section are $125, and picnic tables are $110. All tables seat six people. There is a $3 service charge on all orders.

Tickets may be ordered by phone, mail, fax, or in person at the amphitheater ticket office, 191 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. The amphitheater's web page is www.amphitheater.org.

The concert is sponsored by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center and Resort, Magic 96.7, Lawson Mardon Packaging, Coca-Cola, Don Jackson Lincoln-Mercury, Kroger, Bud Light, Cooper Lighting, Golf Car Sales and Supply and Yamaha.
