Last week was a big week for softball. Many local teams faced off against each other in regional action in games that may determine seedings in the state tournament. The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots played Starr's Mill last Tuesday in what is becoming a super, regional rivalry. Earlier this season Sandy Creek beat the Lady Panthers 7-4. They got a taste of their own medicine, as they were handed their first regional loss in over a year, losing 7-4 to Starr's Mill.

The Lady Patriots made seven errors in the game and Coach Lisa Pearce gave credit to Starr's Mill for playing a perfect game." We did not execute," Pearce said. "We choked." Jessica DeMooney had two hits for the Lady Patriots and Carrie Roundtree had a hit and made nine assists. It was a very offensive game, in that nearly all players on both teams had hits. The difference is that Starr's Mill is used to teams hitting off their pitcher and then making the outs on defense, while Sandy Creek's pitcher Heather Kershaw can almost control a game at will.

The loss for the Lady Patriots was motivation to play what Coach Pearce considered the best game they ever played, as they defeated Woodward Academy 4-3 last Thursday. Senior pitcher Heather Kershaw gave up 3 hits and struck out four, as catcher Lyndsay Faircloth got two RBI and made a tremendous pick off play to first base. Jessica Demooney had an inside the park homerun and Chrissy Lundsford made key outs for Sandy Creek

The McIntosh Lady Chiefs improved their record to 18-3 overall in 5-0 in the region winning all three games last week. They defeated Fayette County 3-2 on Tuesday in extra innings. The game was scoreless until the third inning when Abby Stone doubled and scored both Candace Moore and Britte Hardy. Fayette County tied the game in the bottom of the third and the score remained tied until the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, Jennifer Ward doubled and advanced to third on a bunt by Ashley Tucker. Abby king singled and drove in Ward who turned out to be the winning run. Brooke King pitched the whole game and gave up six hits and earned six strikeouts.

The Lady Chiefs then defeated Starr's Mill 15-5 on Wednesday. The Lady Chiefs had 14 hits against the Lady Panthers. Candace Moore and Britte Hardy each had three hits including a double and 2 RBI in the victory as the defense for Starr's Mill crumbled during a 10 run second inning. Jennifer Ward had 2 hits and 3 RBI while Sabrina McCord and Ashley Tucker had 2 RBI's a piece.

On Thursday, the Lady Chiefs got five runs on four hits and shutout the Newnan Lady Cougars 5-0. Abby King had two hits and an RBI and Brooke King had a hit and an RBI as well. McIntosh was scheduled to play Sandy Creek on Monday but the game was postponed due to weather and will not be rescheduled.
