Fayette County High School Principal Gary Phillips has been named the 1998 MetLife/NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) Georgia Principal of the Year by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals. (GASSP). Principals of the year from each state, New York City and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DODDS) will attend the State Principals of the Year Symposium Oct. 3-6 in Washington, D.C. The principals will speak with officials from the U.S. Department of Education, discuss the current state of education, and how to utilize technology to increase student and teacher performance, and receive their awards at a banquet. As Georgia Principal of the Year, Phillips will also be a candidate for the 1999 National Principal of the Year. NASSP is the nation's largest school leadership organization with more than 46,000 middle level and high school principals and assistant principals. NASSP programs include the National Honor Society, the American Technology Honor Society and the National Alliance of High Schools (NAHS). The announcement was made to the faculty last week at a faculty meeting. Phillips was presented a cake and shirt in honor of the announcement.
