Burning wood and paper trash will resume in Peachtree City Oct. 1, but residents will need a burning permit from the city fire department.

This year, the city has activated an "automated burn permit" telephone number, 770-631-2588, extension 555. The number will be operational from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

City information official Betsy Tyler said the permit line will be updated each morning to let residents know whether conditions allow burning on that day. A list of requirements for outdoor burning is also on the line, and residents may leave a 30-second message with the required information. Any questions that require more information can be answered by calling the fire department at 770-631-2526.

Requirements for outdoor burning include:

Only normal combustibles such as wood and paper may be burned. Under no circumstances can any shingles, PVC pipe, insulation, treated lumber, adhesives, paint or other combustible liquids be burned.

No hydrocarbons may be used to start or fuel a fire.

Burning must be kept a minimum of 50 feet away from any structure, or 15 feet if contained in a drum.

Fires must be attended at all times and the attendant must have a means of controlling the fire.

Fires must be completely extinguished by dark, or prior to the attendant's leaving the site.

Fires must be kept small, and there shall be no more than one burn pile on any building lot that is one acre or less.

Application for burning of vegetative debris for land development must be done in person at Fire Department Headquarters, 105 Peachtree Parkway North. Land development permits may take up to five working days for approval.
