City ponders options to fuel its fleet

By the end of the year, the city of Senoia will decide what to do with its gas storage tank.

New guidelines from the federal Environmental Protection Agency are forcing the city to consider the wisdom of doing away with the tank that is used by city vehicles for filling up. Earlier in the year, the city heard a presentation from Fuelman, a company that provides fueling services for several municipalities around the state.

With the deadline drawing closer, Mayor Joan Trammell asked Eric Taylor from Fuelman to update the council on the company's services.

Taylor explained that the company provides each authorized city employee with a card to use at gas stations that honor the card.

Currently, Crook's Hit and Run in Senoia honors the card, but Taylor said several stations throughout the state honor the card. The company also provides the city with a complete list of reports to monitor the monthly gas usage.

As far as security is concerned, Taylor said the card can be used only to purchase fuel, so city employees would not be able to charge items such as cigarettes and candy.

He said the city would not have to sign a contract and Fuelman makes its money from the service stations that participate in the service.

The card is set up so that only the authorized employee can use it and Taylor said there are safeguards built in if an employee is fired or resigns from the city.

"We can instantly change the access code, so he would not be able to use it," Taylor said.

The new EPA guidelines require the city to have a plan in effect for dealing with its underground storage tank by the end of the year. Trammell said the city would discuss the Fuelman plan and decide by November.
