Work is under way this week on a new mural that will add a colorful side to Newnan's historic Court Square.

Artist Ans Steenmeijer recently started work on the artwork on the side of Scott's Bookstore on LaGrange Street. The mural will depict scenes from Coweta County's past and Main Street director Sue Beard said she believes the mural will become a focal point for the town's downtown.

The idea of painting a mural first occurred two years ago when Coweta officials noticed the murals in Fayetteville and Pine Mountain. The Newnan-Coweta Arts Council and Main Street Newnan applied for a state grant to fund the mural, but were turned down.

This year, Main Street obtained a $2,000 grant to help fund the mural and has started a fund-raising effort to cover the costs of the $9,000 artwork. T-shirts depicting the mural are being sold for $15 and are available at Scott's Bookstore, Bicycles Unlimited, the Welcome Center, Harman Paint, Gus's Jackson Street Grille, the Male Academy Museum and Main Street Newnan.

Main Street also is planning a bike ride Oct. 17 from Newnan to Pine Mountain as an additional fund-raiser.

Netherlands native Steenmeijer was picked by a committee for the Newnan mural after the group examined her work in Pine Mountain. The Coweta residents took the artist on a tour of the county to give her a better feel for the area.

"She's got really good insights," Beard said.
