Amphitheater set to host
hot jazz of Spyro Gyra
Jazz band Spyro Gyra will perform Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. at
Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City.
Spyro Gyra formed in 1975 and hit the charts in 1977
with "Shaker Song." This was at a time when there wasn't a radio
format catering to the contemporary instrumental sounds of Spyro
Gyra, Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn and others. "Back then we
were exploring this music as an adventure," said saxophonist
Jay Beckenstein. Twenty albums later, the group still
performs around the country.
The 20th album "Road Scholars" was released
last year. "That same idea is behind this live album: playing the
music we love with the same enthusiasm that we had when we first
started playing just for the love if it," Beckenstein said. "We just
happen to have been fortunate enough to get the breaks that allowed us
to build a lifetime of performing experience from it."
Tickets for Spyro Gyra are $15 in advance, $18 the day of
the performance. Gold tables in the orchestra section are $125,
picnic tables are $110. All tables seat six people. There is a $3
service charge on all orders.
Tickets may be ordered by phone (770-631-0630, 24
hours), fax (770-631-0430), mail or in person at the Amphitheater
Ticket Office, 191 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City, 30269.
Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. The web
address is www.amphitheater.org.
