Educational site opens on coast
Coastal Encounters Nature Center, in association with
the Jekyll Island Authority, has opened its second educational
site at Jekyll Island on the southeast Georgia coast. The Jekyll
Island site includes an indoor educational center and 17-acre salt pond,
bordered by salt marsh and the Intercoastal Waterway to the west,
and the maritime forest and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
Founded in 1996, Coastal Encounters Nature Center is a
private, nonprofit education center that is dedicated to
promoting appreciation for and conservation of southeast Georgia's
coastal ecosystems. The Jekyll Island Center will offer beach and
marsh explorations, hands-on science and art workshops, and
summer science camps for children ages 7-12. Coastal Encounters'
staff also will offer introductions to sea kayaking and excursions for
experienced kayakers, as well as paddle boats rentals and
maritime forest ecology walks.
In addition to programs and activities for the general
public, the center provides educational programs for K-12 and
college students, scouts, families and other organizations. It is open from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Outdoor programs
are offered throughout the year and indoor aquariums, touch tanks
and displays are open to the public year-round. A one-dollar
donation is requested for admission, with additional fees charged
for individual programs. For information, phone 912-635-9102.
