Fayette needs bike group

Letters from Our Readers

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

We read the letter about bicycling written by Carleton Williams with great interest. One cannot help but admire this man and applaud his courage and willingness to redirect thoughts associated with his accident toward productive and contributory endeavors.

Though neither of us could be referred to as "bicyclists," we certainly enjoy riding bicycles. We also recognize the potential of riding bicycles as a vehicle for improving physical fitness, nurturing camaraderie among family, neighbors and friends, and providing an alternative (especially for young people) to passive, sedentary activities such as watching television and playing video games.

Further, bicycle riding is an activity that lends itself to participation and inclusion of all ages and all ability levels. Few activities or sports especially in the times of today share these advantages.

Certainly, riding a bicycle can be dangerous, just as riding in a car can be dangerous. Obeying the laws and being courteous are critical for safety (as well as behaviors that we teach and learn by example). As the drivers of cars and the riders of bicycles share the road, each of us has a responsibility to respect the other.

Our area needs a bicycle group. Such a group will provide an opportunity for generating awareness, sharing concerns, and learning from one another. We look forward to the formation of this group, and we thank Mr., Williams for his diligence in organizing the group.

By working together, we can make Fayette County safer and more conducive to riding bicycles. (If you are interested in joining the bicycle club, which is being organized in cooperation with the Fayette County Recreation Department, please call Mr. Williams at 770-461-1880).
