Clayton State sports start season off slow

The Clayton State Lady Lakers soccer team dropped two games last weekend in the third annual Hawk Classic at Huntingdon College. The Lady Lakers lost 5-1 to Huntingdon on Saturday, with freshman Heather Roberson scoring the lone Lady Laker goal. The Clayton State goalie, freshman Michelle Smith, tied a school record with 15 saves, while playing with a fractured finger. On Sunday, the Lady Lakers lost to the University of North Alabama, 3-0. UNA outshot Clayton State 23-9. The Lady Lakers host Erskine University 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Clayton State men's soccer team did not fare well either. The Lakers lost their homeopener Monday afternoon, 4-0 to UNC Pembroke. UNC Pembroke had a 15-8 shot advantage and never let the Lakers get their offense going. The Lakers will host Erskine University at home on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader with the Women's team.

The Clayton State cross country team did well in their season opener. The Lakers finished second in a tri-meet, behind Kennesaw State at Kennesaw State last Saturday. Juniors Tye Walker, Manny Juarez and LeRoy Haynes finished in the top 11, with times of 21:24, 21:41 an 22:03 respectively. The freshmen, Cary O'Kelley, Jeremy Harrison and Neil Faulkner were competitive in their first collegiate meet, finishing in the top 20.

The Lady Lakers cross country team also placed second behind Kennesaw State in their section of the tri-meet. Freshman Joni Guffey got eighth place with a time of 20:15 and Sarah Rush, also a freshmen, finished in 10th place with a time of 20:54. Guffey celebrated her 18th birthday on Saturday and recorded the fastest time in a season opener for the Lady Lakers in four years. Juniors Denny Rauch and Hollie Green placed 11th and 13th , with times of 21:15 and 21:58. Both cross country teams will travel to Sewanee, Tenn on Friday for the Sewanee Invitational.
