Fayette Samaritans

Fayette Samaritans volunteers say they have "a whole warehouse full" of donated clothing, most of which they hope to sell on Oct. 10 at the organization's next yard sale. Clothing is routinely given away by Samaritans, but the group has need for cash too, says Charlie Rowe, a longtime volunteer.

Samaritans was formed in 1992 to provide a way for local churches to help people in need without having their resources depleted by those who claim to be in need but are not, Rowe said. Now, 27 Fayette churches have combined resources to help support the effort. Funds are received from sales, donations, and other programs. Sandra Moss is president of the organization, which holds board meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at DFACS.

Coweta-Fayette EMC's "round-up" program, whereby customers may designate funds to help needy families pay electric bills, recently provided Samaritans a grant of $7,500 from the program. The last yard sale, held Aug. 8, netted more than $1,700.

The Oct. 10 sale will be held at the gazebo, just south of the Fayetteville city square. If you can help price items, come any weekday or the first and third Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fayette Self Storage, located on New Hope Road across from Roberds Furniture.

There is a pickup service for donations, or they may be left at the Department of Family and Children's Services offices, 905 Georgia Hwy. 85 south. Samaritans also needs the donation of two cars which can be made reliable with minor repairs. Also, the organization is looking for an affordable (preferably free) rental space for offices, a food pantry, clothes closet and thrift store.

Yard sale help also is needed on Friday Oct. 9, Rowe said. Interested persons can call him at 770-461-8363, or the Samaritans office, 770-460-2586.
