The Fayetteville Church of Christ, currently located on Ga. Highway 85 North, will be moving in a matter of months yet again. The congregation first began in 1952 and was housed in a tent on property near where the current Fayetteville Train Depot is located. It then was housed in a tent on Ga. Hwy. 85 South and then later in the band room of the Fayette County High School until the current facility was completed. There was an old tenant building on the current property, which had to be burned because it was used as a practice burn by the fire department. The land was cleared and then construction finally began. Now they must move again, due to not being able to grow where they are. A developer has purchased the property and they have until December 1998 to vacate the premises. The church hopes to begin new construction by spring of next year. They have purchased 10 acres on Redwine Road, of Ga. Hwy. 85 South and not far from the new Kroger store now under construction. The minister is Scott Harp, who has been with the church for two years. He was born in Haleyville, Ala., and his father is also a Church of Christ minister. His parens went to serve in New Zealand in the late 1970's and are still there. Minister Harp has assisted them in New Zealand for several years and met his wife Jenny while there. They are the parents of twins, Rebecca and Richard, who were born in Auckland, and Brooke, who was born in Tennessee. The are home schooled by their mom. Minister Harp received his advanced education at Freed-Hardeman University in Tennessee and the International Bible College in Florence, Ala. "This church has a real spirit of growth and we need to incorporate that into the changing community," he said. "The church and the community must come together to form a strong connection and we must help members understand the meaning of the Scriptures. We need to become the church that is outlined in the New Testament." "Many people these days," he added, "are looking everywhere for emotional stability but the Bible. We encourage them to join us and they will find it at the Fayetteville Church of Christ." The church is location at 1765 Ga. Hwy. 85 North, on the opposite corner from Office Depot. Sunday morning worship is at 10 a.m. with Sunday school at 9 a.m. A Sunday night service is a 6 p.m. and Bible studies are each Wednesday night at 7:15 p.m. The church office can be reached at 770-461-3617.
