For the fifth year in a row, the Coweta County Commission is planning to lower the millage rate for the county's property owner During Tuesday's commission meeting, the staff recommended the commission advertise a rate of 5.38 for incorporated parts of the county and 6.42 for the unincorporated areas. The rate translates to a reduction of .07 mills for the incorporated residents and .04 mills for the unincorporated citizens. The actual rate will be voted on Sept. 22, but the county has to advertise the figures before a vote can be taken. Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter was pleased the county was able to offer a high level of services, but still cut the tax rate. "If we couldn't lower it, I wouldn't be voting for it," Hunter said. Tax Commissioner Tommy Ferrell told the county's staff the tax digest had grown to $1.269 billion in the unincorporated county and $342 million in the incorporated areas, which translates to increases of 7.95 percent and 7.42 percent, respectively. Later in the month, the Coweta County Board of Education is expected to set its millage rate. The two rates will then be combined. Property tax bills will be sent out in October and be due by mid-December.
