Allan Vincent McLeod, 71, and his son Brandon McLeod, 7,
of Fayetteville, were killed Sunday in an auto accident on Ga.
Highway 138 between Old National Highway and Bethsaida Road.
McLeod's daughter, Carla, 14, remains in Georgia Baptist
Hospital in critical condition with head injuries, according to police.
Police reports said Carla was in the front passenger seat and
Brandon in the rear seat.
Witnesses reported seeing McLeod struggling to steer
the small car after the left rear tire came off McLeod's 1994
Hyundai Excel, causing it to veer into the path of a van transporting
Navy recruits from west Georgia towns. Fulton County Police
investigators Cpl. Cleon Arrington and Cpl. Dexter White said a cause for
the wheel loss had not been determined. Neither car was
speeding, police said.
Two persons in the van, driver Teresa Hardy and recruit
Desiree Teran, both of Columbus, were also taken to Georgia Baptist
Hospital with serious injuries. White said that the other 13 persons
in the van were treated and released from Fayette Community
Hospital.
The van was not a military vehicle but hired to take the
recruits into Atlanta for induction at the Richard B. Russell Federal
Building last Monday. They were to have spent the night at a
Riverdale motel, police said.
