Sports Calendar

Baseball

Sandy Creek High School Booster Club is looking for softball players from the Fayette or Peachtree City Church Leagues to join in the Patriot Classic Softball Tournament. Entry fee $100/team. teams provide their own balls. Gary Teal, 770-631-8795 or 404-778-5858.

Running

The 1998 Peachtree City Classic 15K Open, 5K mens and 5K womens races will be held Saturday Oct. 17. Hosted by the Peachtree City Running Club and Peachtree City, the course through Peachtree City's cart paths was voted the Best Course in Georgia Athlete Magazine, and is always a sellout. The grand prize drawing is two $500 cash vouchers on KLM/Northwest for any domestic destination. There are awards for top three male and female in several races that admit all ages. Cycling

The Fayette County Bicycle Club is being formed by the Fayette County Recreation Department. Club meets Saturdays at 9 a.m. at the Kiwanis Recreation Center. 770-461-9714.

Football

Whitewater Middle School Football Team's introductory meeting will be 4:30 p.m. Aug. 20 in the gym. All Whitewater football players and their parents are required to attend this meeting to get their uniforms, fill out the necessary forms and review team rules. Practice will start the following week. The team finished last season with a 3-3 record. With only two starters returning and being the smallest middle school in the league, the Wildcat's goal of a winning season will be challenging, said coach Mike Vena. Vena asks the team to consider this quote from baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson: "Success is not something you stumble onto or come to by accident. It is something you must prepare for." In his team's case, you prepare by spending many hours in the weight room and on the field.

Booth Middle School football team will hold its organizational meeting after school Monday, Aug. 24, until 5:30 p.m. Equipment will be issued to all players who have a physical exam on file and who meet academic eligibility requirements.Team members must pass all subjects for the year and have passing grades from the past spring semester.

Students who plan to participate in football must have a current physical examination on file or present one to the coach before the first practice in order to recieve equipment. The school will furnish all equipment except for shoes and practice jerseys. Please use white practice jerseys. Official practice will begin Aug. 25 from 3:45-6 p.m.

Peachtree City is set to start registering players for the annual flag football league. The organization meeting is set for Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kedron Fieldhouse. Registration starts directly after the meeting. For more information, call Grady Sikes at 770-631-2542.

Golf

1998 Summer Break Junior Golf Clinics will take place at Wendell Coffee Golf Center in Tyrone throughout the summer. Designed to teach the basics of golf, each junior receives instruction according to his/her level of play. Fee includes unlimited range balls and use of the 18 hole Rocky Creek Putting Course, snacks and drinks and competition for prizes. Age groups are 6-10 years, 10-14 years and 14-17 years. Cost is $50/child ages 6-10 ($275 for seven clinics), $60/child ages 10-14 ($395 for eight clinics) and $60/child ages 14-17 ($150 for three clinics).

A golf tournament is set for Sept. 12 at The Links in Jonesboro. The First Annual St. Francis High School Golf Tournament has an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Cost/$100 (tax dedcutible, lunch is included). Grand prize raffle, hole in one contest, backyard style picnic and more. Info, call 770-997-0877. Register by August 29.

Shooting

The Fayette County Extension Service is accepting registration for its 4-H shooting sports program. Information, 770-460-5730, ext. 412.

Fayette County's 4-H Modified Trap Shooting team is looking for male and female shooters, grades 7-12. Shooters must have parental permission, have completed a hunter's safety course and furnish their own shells. Team shotguns are available. There is room for 20 new members. Soccer

NCAA Women's Soccer is coming to Peachtree City. The Clemson Lady Tigers and UAB Lady Blazers compete Aug. 22 at Peachtree City's baseball/soccer complex on Highway 74 South. The event is at 7:30 p.m. and is $4 per advance ticket, or $6 at the door. For more information, call Mark at 770-487-5768.

Swimming

Misc.

Gym South is Fayetteville is offering Campnastics this summer for children 5-13. Activities are scheduled from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Activities include gymnastics, bowling, skating, basketball, cheering, martial arts, outdoor games and more. Runs June through August 12.
