Coming together as one

'that the world may believe'

A water-lover and a land-lover went out fishing on a small boat one day. After a few moments out on the water the land lover, not familiar with appropriate small-boat safety, stood up in the boat and fell over into the water.

In a panic he began to yell, "Save me! I can't swim. Save me!"

The water-lover reached over the side of the boat, grabbed and pulled the land-lover's right hand in an attempt to save him. To his surprise the land-lover's arm came off. He had an artificial arm.

The land-lover yelled louder, "Save me! I can't swim." The water-lover then grabbed his other hand and pulled. It was also artificial and came off. Amid the cries for help, the water-lover grabbed the land-lover's right leg. He pulled and it came off also. The same happened with the left leg.

In desperation he reached over and grabbed the land-lover by the hair, but with a tug he pulled a toupee from the land-lover's head.

Choking and spitting water, the land-lover came to the surface again and in desperation said, "Do something. I'm drowning!"

At that the water-lover sat back in the boat, looked at the land-lover, and said, "If I'm going to help you, you are going to have to stick together!"

This illustrates what is happening in much of the Church. In our fractured state we struggle and cry out, "Lord, help us, save us!" Jesus looks over and says, "If I'm going to help you, you're going to have to stick together!" He prayed in John 17:21, "that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in Us so that the world may believe that You have sent me."

This Sunday evening at 6 p.m. the Church in Fayette County will have an opportunity to stick together as we join in a Unity Service at Starrs Mill High School. Ron Kenoly will be the worship leader, Jesus will be the object of our worship, and Biblical unity will be demonstrated to Fayette County. Be there Sunday as we "stick together, and the Lord helps us."

Chuck Griffith is pastor of Fayette Assembly of God, 1144 Ga. Highway 92 South in Fayetteville, 770-719-0322.
