Six local students have completed freshman orientation at Berry College, familiarizing themselves with the campus, curriculum and student activities. Participants also met with student body leaders, faculty, administrators and academic advisors.

Fayette County High School graduates Grant Carter Branden and Travis Stuart Cochran completed the orientation this summer, as did Amanda Alice-Estel Johns of Sandy Creek High School, and Joel Heath Foy Jr., Joshua Ryan Rusk and Lisette Anne Torres, all from McIntosh High School.

Sandy Creek High School graduate Ashley Mobley has been awarded a one-quarter-tuition scholarship to The Art Institute of Atlanta for the associate's degree program in culinary arts. Scholarship winners were selected based on portfolio work, projects, high school achievement and letters of recommendation. Mobley is the daughter of Shaun and Randy Mobley of Fayetteville.

Tyrone resident Audrea R. Vann has been awarded the $1,000 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship. She was nominated by her employer, R. Douglas Mickey, operator of the Fayetteville Dwarf House. The program provides assistance to restaurant employees who want to further their education. Vann will also be eligible for the Truett Cathy Scholar Award, which provides additional $1,000 scholarships to the top 25 Leadership Scholarship recipients each year.

Michael S. Tiffany, of Fayetteville, and Patrick L. Cotrona, of Peachtree City, were awarded Merit Scholarship awards by Georgia Institute of Technology through the National Merit Scholarship Corp. The two were of 7,400 finalists nationwide who were screened by their 1996 PSAT/NMSQT test scores, and had to present an outstanding academic record, be endorsed by their high school principal, confirm their test performance on a second test and provide an essay describing activities, interests and goals.

Tiffany graduated this year from Fayette County High School, and plans to study computer science. Cotrona is a McIntosh High School graduate, and also plans to study computer science. Among other activities, both were members of their high school's National Honor Society, were medalists in the Science Olympiad and were involved in their church youth group.
