Bad Links? | Union Citys Fall Festival is this weekendEach year Union City hosts a fall festival in early October. Its purpose is to promote a sense of community throughout the residents and business people of South Fulton County. The repetitive theme of the festival is Celebrate Union City. The festival features two days of activities that include activities for all tastes and age groups. This years festival is scheduled for Oct. 7-8. The festival activities will be held at Shannon Mall. Today, beginning at 5:30 p.m., the festival presents Fiesta Day, a street dance that features a Latin disc jockey. Latin American food vendors and Piata Bashes for children 12 and under will be staged throughout the evening. This year a free concert featuring the Zapp Band is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Tomorrow the festival parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the old Wal-Mart location on Ga. Highway 138. The parade will cross the road and enter the new Wal-Mart parking area, then continue onto Shannon Parkway and on to Londonderry Way and then to Ring Road at Shannon Mall. The parade will feature marching bands from Creekside, Banneker and Tri-Cities high schools. There will be a Battle of the Bands exhibition following the parade. Cheerleaders from all three schools will also put on an exhibition following the parade. The parades grand marshal will be Marquis Grissom, professional baseball player and local celebrity. Other South Fulton businesses and personalities will be on hand during the parade. A 3-on-3 basketball tournament (Hoop-Fest) will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday. Cash prizes, trophies and tee-shirts will be awarded to participants. A vendor area has been provided at Shannon Mall that will include local vendors with a variety of food, novelties and information. Throughout the afternoon local performers will be featured on the sound stage at Shannon Mall. These acts will include dancers, models, gospel, R&B, country and various other performers. On Saturday evening there will be a street dance and concert featuring the popular show band Music Music. The festival will conclude with a spectacular fireworks exhibition. All parade participants are asked to meet with organizers at the old Wal-Mart at 9 a.m. Saturday. The parade will begin promptly at 10 a.m. Vehicles will be provided for the grand marshal, Mayor Ralph Moore and members of the City Council. Immediately following the parade the opening ceremony will begin at the sound stage erected at Shannon Mall near Buffalos. The mayor will be introduced and give a welcoming address. The introduction of the City Council and grand marshal will follow. Immediately following the opening ceremonies the Battle of the Bands will mark the official opening of the festival.
